Bahasa Indonesia merupakan alat komunikasi dalam kehidupan sehari-hari dan memegang peranan penting dalam kehidupan manusia. Peranan bahasa Indonesia ini untuk bertutur, baik sacara lisan maupun tulisan, sehingga dapat membantu untuk pembentukan karakter siswa itu sendiri. Dengan berbahasa Indonesia secara baik, benar dan santun dapat menjadikan suatu kebiasaan yang dapat membentuk pribadi seseorang menjadi lebih baik lagi. Siswa diharapkan mengalami perkembangan intelektual, sosial, dan emosional. Maka dari itu keterampilan berbahasa Indonesia dapat membantu perkembangan diri bagi siswa itu sendiri. Tetapi dalam kenyataannya bahasa Indonesia dianggap sebagai bahasa yang paling sulit digunakan. Padahal bahasa Indonesia telah menjadi bahasa ibu masyarakat Indonesia dan juga telah diajarkan sejak pendidikan formal hingga perguruan tinggi..
Minimnya kemampuan berbahasa Indonesia ini dikarenakan oleh beberapa hal, diantaranya kurangnya pemahaman penggunaan bahasa Indonesia yang baik dan benar. Kebanyakan siswa masih mencampuradukan penggunaan bahasa Indonesia dengan bahasa lain dan tidak adanya kemauan dalam penggunaan bahasa Indonesia juga merupakan penyebab minimnya berbahasa Indonesia. Mereka bahkan ada yang tidak pernah menggunakan bahasa Indonesia, karena kebiasaan keluarga dan lingkungan sekitarnya menggunakan bahasa lain. Secara otomatis mau tidak mau siswa harus berbicara menggunakan bahasa lain selain bahasa Indonesia. Begitu juga pada saat di lingkungan sekolah. Saat berkomunikasi deangan teman, bahkan dengan guru pun masih sering menggunakan bahasa lain. Siswa seakan merasa kesulitan untuk membiasakan berbahasa Indonesia pada saat di lingkungan sekolah. Ini sangat memperihatinkan bagi kita semua, terutama bagi dunia pendidikan.
Lantas apa yang harus kita lakukan agar siswa mempunnyai kebiasaan berbahasa Indonesia? Kita harus mencari strategi pembelajaran yang efektif dalam rangka upaya meningkatkan penggunaan bahasa Indonesia di kalangan siswa Sesuai dengan isi GBPP pelajaran bahasa Indonesia, bahwa pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia disajikan dalam beberapa komponen kebahasaan, pemahaman dan penggunaannya yang disajikan secara terpadu. Namun dalam kegiatan pembelajaran, guru harus dapat memfokuskan pada salah satu komponen pembelajaran kebahasaan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman dan penggunaan bahasa.
Penggunaan bahasa Indonesia di kalangan pelajar juga masih acak-acakan terutama dalam hal penempatan bahasa. Mungkin ini disebabkan oleh pengaruh lingkungan tempat tinggal. Di televisi pun sekarang banyak acara-acara yang memasukan bahasa-bahasa gaul di dalamnya, baik dalam berbicara ataupun bertutur kata. Mereka banyak menggunakan bahasa gaul sebagaai pola hidup yang wajar diucapkan walaupun kata-kata itu tidak baku.
Dengan kata lain bahasa Indonesia harus lebih diutamakan karena apabila tidak, bahasa Indonesia lama kelamaan akan tidak dipakai dan hilang keasliannya . Upaya yang harus dilakukan siswa adalah menjadikan bahasa Indonesia melekat dalam kehidupannya. Sswa harus mencintai bahasa Indonesia . Siswa juga harus mengucapkan bahasa Indonesia secara baik dan benar. Dengan demikian penggunaan bahasa Indonesia dengan baik dan benar mengindikasikan rasa cinta terhadap negara . generasi muda sebagai penerus bangsa hendaknya mengutamakan penggunaan bahasa Indonesia yang baik dan benar dalam kehidupan sehari-hari
